I don't know if this is greatly insightful or not, but I think that we should pray about decisions in two distinct ways. First, as we approach the decision, we should be asking for discernment and wisdom. (This is an excellent time to take notes about what you're thinking about and how you're feeling.) Then once we've made up our own minds, we can take that decision before the Lord for His confirmation.

I've often had a number of insights as I asked for help in making a decision or a plan that ended up shaping my thoughts without being complete answers in and of themselves. (Trying to find the right person to be a counselor, planning a talk or lesson, etc.)
