john: philly has a fairly extensive concreate and wood skatepark in FDR park, under one of the local freeways, in Philly. I skated too (until college); but haven't touched a board in years. Posted by lyle

I'm not really sure how much of a talent it was. As I remember it, all three of us ended up kind of bruised and banged up. I think it was the lack of bindings; snowboarding is much easier than cafeteria tray-boarding... Posted by RoastedTomatoes

I can offer a first-hand witness that John was indeed an unbelievably committed skater kid. Challenge not the integrity of John Fowles! For he is a man of truth! At least when it comes to skateboarding stories. Or at least the story that he has skateboarded; some of the specific stories seemed a little sketchy to me at the time (sorry, John, but the truth must be told). J., Simon, I've never graffiti'd anything before. That's not to say, however, that I haven't engaged in some form of skateboarderish vandalism or another during my errant days of youth. Yes, of course, Santa Cruz, San Bernadino, L.A., and, really, all of California go without saying! Kim, it sounds like a great skate spot. I'm sure there are crowds of skaters there at all hours in the summer. I don't think I've ever seen it in skate videos, though. I've seen the Minnesota capitol building in some skate videos, but I know that's not really even close. Dave, not so! Posted by john fowles

Too bad you don't live in Regina, SK, where the premier of the province has made it legal for skateboarders to skate on the property of the Legislative building (which, incidentally, my great-great-grandfather helped build). It's a pretty sweet property with a lot of cement, which means lots of planters, rails and steps. Posted by Kim Siever

I'm disappointed you overlooked what is arguably the Mecca of skateboarding: Venice Beach, CA. What of Santa Cruz, CA, namesake of the famed skateboard brand? Thanks for the post. It brought back memories of days long gone by when bruises and aches went away in a matter of days, if not hours. BTW, I believe you can aswer J.Stapley's comment because the statute of limitation has run. Posted by Simón
