American Accent

Following the link on BCC’s sidebar brought me to another of those little online American English quizzes, not dissimilar to the one I blogged about nearly two years ago here in which the quiz concluded that I spoke “General American English” which I further redefined as “California English”. The new quiz shows similar results:

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

“You have a Midland accent” is just another way of saying “you don’t have an accent.” You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

The West

The Inland North

Boston

North Central

The Northeast

The South

Philadelphia

This time the conclusion is that I have a “Midland” accent. Does this mean I will fit right in in the British Midlands?

    Apparently, I speak “Philadelphian.”

  2. Peter says:

The West: “Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you’re a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent.”

    neato.

  3. Geoff J says:

I’m all West too. I do use a little surfer-speak still occasionally (even though I suck at surfing) so that might give me away as a San Diegan. Of course the terms I gleaned from my mission in Tennessee might confuse a listener on occasion…

I guess I have the midland accent too. Although, I’m not really sure where I could say I’m from–sometimes I claim Dallas, sometimes Utah, depeding on whom I am speaking with (or dare I say, whom I am trying to impress?).

  5. David J says:

Midland here. Makes sense from growing up in Sacramento and living in KY & WI the past 4 years. The word pairs they presented almost always sound the same to me, except I think “pin” and “pen” sound very different.

Does anyone know Blake Ostler’s email addy?

    Oh yeah, here’s my results:
